2025 International Year of Quantum Science and Technology
The United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ), a global initiative to raise awareness of quantum science and its applications. The timing is significant, as 2025 marks 100 years since the origins of quantum theory, with Heisenberg’s pioneering work laying the foundation for modern quantum mechanics. The opening ceremony will be held on 4 – 5 February at UNESCO Headquarters, in Paris.
A key event of the IYQ will be a commemorative workshop from 9 –14 June on Helgoland, Germany where Werner Heisenberg first formulated quantum mechanics. Held exactly 100 years after this historic breakthrough, the workshop will gather leading global physicists to honour the birth of quantum theory.
In attendance, Professor Michelle Simmons, Director of the Centre for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology (CQC²T) and founder and CEO of Silicon Quantum Computing, will highlight Australia’s significant achievements in quantum research.
The ARC Centre of Excellence in Quantum Computation and Communication Technology (CQC²T) has been instrumental in positioning Australia as a world leader in quantum science, leveraging its exceptional researchers and infrastructure to drive global advancements. Coinciding with the IYQ, CQC²T will celebrate 25 years of support. This milestone highlights the Australian Government’s commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration.
This year also presents a unique opportunity to bring quantum science into public discussion. With quantum technologies advancing rapidly, increasing public understanding is vital. Encouraging young people to pursue maths and physics is more crucial than ever for building a future workforce, as progress in quantum science has the potential to impact many industries ranging from healthcare and finance to national security.
In Australia, the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) is coordinating national activities for the IYQ, led by Professor Nicolas Menicucci from CQC²T’s RMIT node. With sustained and effective leadership, Australia will play a central role in promoting quantum science, inspiring the next generation, and contributing to global discussions.
As we celebrate 100 years of quantum theory, 2025 will be a landmark year for global collaboration and engagement, inspiring future breakthroughs in quantum science.
