A. Prof Sellars’ main research expertise is in the spectroscopy of solid-state optical centres and their application to quantum information processing. He held postdoctoral positions at CSIRO and at the Dortmund University, Germany, before taking up a position at the Australian National University in 1998. Since 2008 he has been the head of the Solid-State Spectroscopy group within the Laser Physics Centre, Research School of Physics and Engineering. From 2015 to 2017 he was the head of the Laser Physics Centre and is currently the Research School of Physics and Engineering’s Associate Director for Infrastructure.
Matthew manages the Rare-Earth Integration Program, which aims to develop quantum memories, sources and detectors utilizing rare-earth doped crystals for quantum communication applications. His group specialises in studying quantum coherent interactions between solid-state systems and light and applying the results of these studies to develop quantum information processing devices. The group combines precision spectroscopy, advance material development with quantum optics and quantum information processing. He has published 5 refereed journal articles in the prestigious Nature suite of journals and 13 Physical Review Letters.
