After being awarded degrees in 1981 and 1983 and a PhD in 1988, Prof James became the Visiting Assistant Professor with the Division of Applied Mathematics, Brown University in Providence, USA. From 1989 to 1991 Matthew was an Assistant Professor with the Department of Mathematics, University of Kentucky in Lexington, USA and joined the Australian National University in 1991. From 2001 to 2002 he served as Head of the Department of Engineering.

Matthew has held visiting positions with the University of California, San Diego; the Imperial College, London and the University of Cambridge. Matthew has authored more than 200 papers and is currently serving as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. He has previously served the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimisation, Automatica, and Mathematics of Control, Signals and Systems. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and held an Australian Research Council Professorial Fellowship from 2004 to 2008. Professor James served on the ARC College of Experts (MIC panel) during 2005–2006. His main research interests concern the control and design of quantum technological systems.
