After being awarded degrees in 1981 and 1983 and a PhD in 1988, Professor James became Visiting Assistant Professor with the Division of Applied Mathematics, Brown University, Providence, USA. From 1989 to 1991 he was Assistant Professor with the Department of Mathematics, University of Kentucky, Lexington, USA and joined the Australian National University in 1991. From 2001 - 2002 he served as Head of the Department of Engineering.
He has held visiting positions with the University of California, San Diego, Imperial College, London, and University of Cambridge. In 2007, Professor James was a co-recipient (with Drs L. Bouten and R. Van Handel) of the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization Best Paper Prize. He is currently serving as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, and has previously served SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, Automatica, and Mathematics of Control, Signals, and Systems. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, and held an Australian Research Council Professorial Fellowship during 2004-2008. Professor James served on the ARC College of Experts (MIC panel) during 2005-2006. Professor James' main research interests concern the control and design of quantum technological systems.
Professor James contributes expertise in the areas of quantum networks and quantum feedback control to the development of quantum communications systems integrating quantum optical channels and solid state quantum memories.
